Carers Bulletin Flu Article |
As we approach the Flu season this autumn/winter, be sure to protect yourself and those close to you from the Flu by getting a Flu vaccine. The Flu Vaccine is the best protection against the Flu and is available for free for many eligible people, from their GP or local pharmacy. Carers are eligible for a free NHS Flu vaccine, if they either receive Carers Allowance or are the main carer of an individual whose welfare would be at risk if you were to fall ill with the Flu. Vaccines are available from around the start of October, speak to your GP or local pharmacy for more information.
People you care for are eligible for the Flu vaccine from their GP or local pharmacy, if they are aged either over 65, have a long-term condition or are pregnant. Primary School children are also eligible via a free nasal spray vaccination which is offered at School, look out for our Flu Fighters campaign for more information about Primary School aged Flu Vaccinations.

Café Neuro Wolverhampton
Café Neuro Wolverhampton is a peer support group for people who are living with neurological and neuromuscular conditions that is facilitated by Compton Care and Healthwatch Wolverhampton with the support of the Black Country Neurological Alliance.
Conditions that may come under this umbrella could be Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease, Huntingdon’s Chorea, FND and/or difficulties arising from stroke or brain injury although this is not an exhaustive list.
We hold the session every 3rd Thursday of the month at The Poynings Community Room, Regis Road, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, WV6 8QN, starting at 2pm and finishing at 4pm.
Our session is open to anyone over the age of 18 and you are welcome to attend with your carers and/or loved ones if you so wish. We are also happy for professionals to come along with people that they are supporting if patients/service users have no other way of getting to us.
As well as peer support, we are planning to create a programme of guest speakers to come and talk to group members about issues that may be pertinent to them such as continence care and use of mobility aids although this will be confirmed later in the year.
Please feel free to signpost anyone who you think may be suitable to the session. If you have any queries, please contact Clare Whittaker on 07534 645340 or email me on clarewhittaker@comptoncare.org.uk

er Support Bulletin October 2019 Information, advice and guidance for carers. The Carers Wellbeing Café The Carers Wellbeing Café 9th September 2019 at the Lighthouse Media Centre The Carers Wellbeing café meets on the second Monday of the month at the Lighthouse Media Centre Wolverhampton. “I really enjoy meeting other carers at the café, there is always a friendly welcome and a cup of tea. Normally the talks are really interesting and when I go home I chat to my daughter about the things the group have talked about “ This month Suzanne and Heather from Trading Standards came and gave the carers group a talk about being ‘scam aware’ and staying ‘Scam Savvy’ It was an informative group with carers asking lots of questions about such things as on-line security while internet banking, on line shopping, cold calling and other issues. The carers felt the meeting was good and felt much more aware of what to look out for and who to contact regarding any issues to do with trading standards. Hatha Yoga Sessions for Carers |
Hatha Yoga promotes balance in the body and mind through a combination of synchronised posture and focused breath work. The sessions will consist of a grounding period of 5 minutes, followed by the practice of physical Yoga postures for approximately 45 minutes followed by a relaxation period of approximately 10 minutes. Yoga is believed to have a calming effect on the nervous system; balancing the mind body and emotions. It is thought by some practitioners to prevent specific diseases by keeping life energy flowing. Yoga has been used to lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve co-ordination, flexibility, concentration, sleep and digestion. Yoga helps to develop discipline. This comes from making the time on a regular basis to either go to Yoga classes, or practice yoga at home. However, there is a subtler level of discipline that can be achieved simply by being mindful of the quality of your breath and the deeper effects that specific Yoga postures have on your body. The Community Support Team have organised free yoga sessions with the Inna Harmony Yoga instructor at East Park Library once a week on a Friday since the beginning of August 2019. 10 carers have attended and the feedback and benefit from the sessions has been really positive. ‘Socialising, relaxing, keep healthy, the instructor was great’ ‘something for the carer-wonderful’ ‘Relaxation techniques, stretching to strengthen back muscles.’ ‘One hour a week for me to concentrate on me’ ‘These sessions cannot be improved’ ‘It helped me to gain balance, remain calm, loved the classes would love more’. ‘Me time’ ‘It was fabulous, it gave me time to recharge my batteries’ The team are planning on arranging more six-week sessions if you are interested please contact Admin at The Carer Support Team On 01902 553409 |
